Presenting...

Good afternoon everyone!

I have finally uploaded the pictures of our baby boy.  I'm so happy to be able to share it with all of you...especially since we're so far away from our friends and family.  I can't believe Taytum is already over a week old!!!  Time is flying now that he's here.  We are all doing great...a little tired, but that's to be expected.  Rieley is slowly coming to grips with having a baby in the house.  She's still fighting for attention, but is really, really helpful with taking care of him.  She likes to be a part of raising him.  : )  He has taken to nursing really well.  I think he's more acclamated to it then mommy is...I do not particularly enjoy boobs sitting up at my chin and all the fabulous issues a mommy goes through in the first week or two of breastfeeding.  But I wouldn't have it any other way...it's so much better for them.  SUPPORT BREASTFEEDING!  Haha.  Anyway...take a look at what has made our lives so much more special in the last week or so!!!

XO,
Stephanie

Birth Day

Phew!  I can finally write and say that our little man has made it!!!  That's right!  He's here.  Now that all FOUR of us have had our showers and are relaxing for the night, I thought I'd take some time to appease my fans...if I have any that is.  Hehe.  So you ready to hear all about it?  The day that he decided to show up?  Here we go...

It all started this past Monday (11/8) very early in the morning.  I was awoken by those intense contractions at about 4:45 in the morning.  Per doctor's orders, I thought I'd wait it out for an hour to make sure they were regular before calling in and heading to the hospital.  Half an hour later though, I couldn't take it anymore and had Jason page the doctor.  I, in the meantime, started to get dressed and made sure I had all of the last minute items I wanted to have at the hospital with me because I just knew that this was going to be it...it hurt like hell!!  By the time I was ready, Jason was dressed, and Rieley was up and out of bed, the doctor finally called back and told Jason to bring me in.  And so we did.  We all piled into the car and began to reverse out of the garage when we realized that it had snowed!  The first snow for Groton town of the year (and the only day according to the next 7-day forecast).  On top of that, it was raining which all together made for some scary driving conditions...especially for a family who has been residing in the sunny Hawaiian islands for the last 5 years together.  I wanted to get there safely of course, but dangit we had to get there...and FAST!

By the time we got to the next town, New London, which is where the hospital is located I needed J to step on it!!  I was pounding the dash and screaming while my 3-year-old daughter was in the back seat coaching me saying, "It's OK, Mommy.  We're almost there."  How cute is that?  ; )  Before we reached the ER I felt myself truly fighting the urge to push...I was literally holding my breath every time I felt a contraction.  I could feel that head descending and I was scared!  When we finally reached the hospital, Jason got the lady at the front desk to bring me a wheel chair and an ER staff wheeled me to the 4th floor maternity ward while Jason parked the car with Rieley.  The hospital staffer did a good job trying to take my mind off of the contractions all the while asking questions like what the sex of the baby was and if it was my first.  We got there in the nick of time.  The nursing staff and my doctor was already grouped together in what would be my son's birth place.  I waited for the contraction to let up before standing and the nurse helped me remove my boots and drop my drawers.  She helped me onto the birthing bed and told me to push as soon as I felt the need to!  Boy did I!

I, already knowing the answer, asked the doctor if it was too late for an epidural and he practically laughed in my face.  Great.  No drugs.  I thought my husband wasn't going to make it in time and I was on my own, but next thing I know he rushes into the room pushing Rieley in her stroller.  Thankfully, one of the nurses took Lil Miss to her station and helped occupy her with books and stickers.  Jason said he could see the baby's head crowning as he walked through the door.  So with my own maternity tank top still on I pushed on the next contraction.  My water broke in the middle of pushing and all I wanted from that moment was for the doctor to get this kid out of me!!!  I swear it only took 3 really good pushes and he was out within half an hour after leaving the house.  They laid this tiny, messy, squirmy bundle on my chest and I was in complete shock.  I couldn't believe that he was here.

Next the nurses proceeded to clean him up and take his vitals.  Taytum A.K.E. was officially born on November 8, 2010 at 6:17am weighing in at 7lbs 11oz. and measuring 19 1/2 inches in length.  He was slightly smaller than his sister, but also 10 days early.  He had all 10 fingers and all 10 toes and is doing quite well.  The nurse said Rieley was getting antsy to come back to mom and dad and meet her baby brother so of course we said it was OK to bring her back into the room.  She was a little in awe when she saw a real live baby that had just come out of mommy's belly.

The one good thing about not having the epidural was that I could pretty much walk right away.  After everything settled down, the staff had us relocate to my recovery room and I was able to walk to the bathroom to get cleaned up.  My mother-in-law came strolling in to meet her newest grandbaby at around noon that day and sort of fought with Rieley over holding the baby.  : )  We spent the next 48 hours being cared for and catered to by the nurses.  Wednesday morning we got to bring Little Man home.  He's done really well since we got here.  He's a healthy baby boy and has brought us much joy since he greeted our family.  Rieley has been trying very hard to be the best big sister she can be.  She wants to be a part of everything from picking out his clothes, calming him when he cries, bathing him, and everything in between.  Of course, she's got much to learn about being gentle with a newborn, but we're all working with her.  She's done really well in mimicking us with her baby dolls.  We're truly looking forward to watching our children bond as siblings and the many happy memories we will make together.

As we are all still adjusting to Taytum's sleep schedule, I haven't gotten around to uploading pictures yet, but I promise I will as soon as I find the energy to.  In the meantime, I can tell you that he has a full head of very fine and soft black hair.  He has the same button nose Rieley does and Jason's mouth.  He has my eyes - slanted and dark, but at the moment they seem to have a blue tint.  I want to get excited about that, but we all know baby's features change so rapidly that we don't really know what color they will end up being.  All in all, he is a smaller version of Rieley as a newborn and resembles his good ol' grandpa.  Get that needle ready, mom.  : )

One side note.  Taytum has what they call a sacriatic dimple at the bottom of his spine.  There isn't a huge concern as the pediatrician that saw our baby boy is pretty sure everything looks in order.  However, we are having an ultrasound done just to make sure that the base of his spine is fully formed and that there isn't any space for poop to enter into.  That would have to be addressed immediately, but from what the doctor says, the ultrasound is just for peace of mind and there is no reason to be concerned at this time.  We just ask that you keep us in your thoughts and prayers that everything is indeed fine.

Hope you found this story entertaining.  I wish you knew just how happy we are.  I am still adjusting to the idea that I have two, that's right two, children.  I'm also adjusting to the fact that I have a son.  : )  We are one happy family.  : )  We are looking forward to introducing our newest addition to you all at some point in the near future.  In the meantime, keep checking back for updates and pictures.

Love!
Stephanie

Pregger Update

Alright people...I let a few days slide since I've been on and I hope that I didn't give you the idea that I was leaving you out of the loop, if in fact anyone is even reading this blog.  Lol.  Actually, it's quite the opposite, but I will get to that in a little bit.

At the moment, I am attempting to catch up on the recordings in my DVR qeue which is currently at almost 50% capacity.  The list consists of my daily soap opera, evening comedies, and of course, Dancing with the Stars!!!  Since Audrina is gone, I think I'm going to give my support to Kyle and Lacey...they're just so much fun.  Hehe.  I love Kyle's young, goofball sense of humor.

Anyway...so on to the news that you actually may want to hear about.  The little man is still lodged inside of my insides.  I think he's enjoying it in there way too much.  If this is any indication of his personality, he's quite the opposite of his sister who thrives on being the center of attention...much like her mommy.  I truly thought that he would have made his appearance by now merely because every week, I am dilated an additional centimeter and effaced 25% more than the previous.

Every day I think is going to be the day.  I've been progressing steadily, but seemingly slowly.  What's going on?  Something's happening in there...but he's just so stubborn.  My current status (as of Monday) is 3 cm dilated and 75% effaced.  I have another doctor's appointment tomorrow afternoon and if the trend continues, I should be ready to go into labor.  Who knows, though.  I can't get my hopes up as I keep getting disappointed.  I have episodes of contractions that seem to intensify and then poof!  They vanish into thin air.

This is the worst part of the pregnancy...the countdown to labor.  I'm so beyond crazy excited to meet my son, but at the same time I am anticipating the pain of the real labor contractions and the healing...that scares me.  At the same time, I'm overanalyzing every single feeling I feel in my belly and pelvic area and torture myself with the idea that this just might be the time.  Yet, I don't really want to call the doctor for every little thing.  With Rieley, I think I went into the hospital about 3 or 4 times before the day actually came...and even then my water didn't break right away, nor did my contractions let me know it was time.  In fact, if it wasn't for my sister forcing me to go to the hospital the final time, I don't know that I would have known exactly when to go.  So, I'm constantly wondering how I will know when the right time is.

In the meantime, we have finally completed the nursery as much as possible for the moment.  The only thing that's missing is a rocker that I want to get, but am holding off on for a little bit.  His crib finally came in and is put together.  His clothes are washed and hung or put away in his dresser.  Rieley is participating in the preparations as well.  We took her to the "I'm going to be a Big Brother/Big Sister" class hosted by the hospital I'm delivering at.  She had a great time learning to change a diaper and swaddle a baby.  She was told what toys would or wouldn't be appropriate for a baby and what to expect out of the baby - you know the deal...eat, sleep, pee, poop, and cry.  The instructor gave all the kids a tour of the maternity ward and they even got to ride up and down on a labor bed much like the one their mommy's will deliver on.  I think it's so important to get older siblings involved in the whole process.  Rieley already shows tendencies of being a little jealous and we're not completely sure she's ready to share the spotlight, but hopefully being a part of everything will make her slightly more comfortable.  Don't worry...her brother already got her a present or Rieley prize as she likes to call gifts!!!  ; )

I do have one more concern, though.  I think most military wives can relate.  When you are uprooted from your "home" in the midst of a pregnancy, it poses the concern of having the necessary support around you.  We're still fairly new to Connecticut and haven't really made true "friends" that we can rely on for help during this time.  Our neighbor is so nice and has offered help as well as Jason's chief, however, it's not quite the same.  We are still getting to know these people and I don't feel comfortable asking them to take Rieley in while we're posted in the hospital.  Momma Elkins is 2 hours away and sometimes I worry if she'll get to the hospital in time.  Of course, we want her there!!!  She is in fact, Grams!  We just don't know when this little peanut will decide he's ready to meet the world and how long labor will take.  From what the doctors say, being that it's not our first pregnancy, my body should already know what to do and my progress proves that it does.  It's kind of a lonely and uneasy feeling wondering if Daddy will have to stay with Rieley while I give birth "alone" with just the doctors and nurses.  : (

OK...enough mommy worry.  I will just relax and try to be patient as much as I can.  I am due in a week and a half...I can hold off that long if necessary...right???  Right???  I have to take it day by day.  We'll see what the doctors say tomorrow.  And to my unborn son, I don't want to rush you, but know that mommy wants to meet you and hold you close already!!!

Stephanie

The Waiting Game

Brrr...it's getting pretty chilly here.  Temps have been 60 and under...mostly under.  In Hawaii, I'm so used to it being warm when the sun is out.  :P  I don't mind it so much, though.  It's so much easier to warm up than it is to cool down and it's nice to get to wear sweat pants around the house or jackets out and about.  Of course, I can't resist the cute boots and scarves that come with the territory also.  Woot woot!!!

Well, we're still playing the waiting game.  I went to see my doctor today.  It was a good appointment...everything is still looking good.  I've gained a lot more weight than I'd like to have, however what should I expect when I'm scurrying around the kitchen looking for a snack at 11/12 at night.  Lol.  It's a really bad habit I've picked up in the last month or so and am going to have to kick once this baby shows up.  Yikes!  Speaking of the little man making his appearance...I am measuring at about 3cm dilated now and am 75% effaced meaning my body is gearing up!!!!  That was music to my ears let me tell ya because I am so ready....I think.  Lol.

Now that Halloween has come and gone, it does seem like time is just going to pass us by without a warning.  The trees are no longer their fiery red and orange and are actually starting to bare its brownish, dead leaves.  I still see the beauty in them, though.  It's just so different from what I'm used to, ya know?  I'm truly looking forward to Thanksgiving.  I hope our home is full of family that we love and that we can introduce our baby to.  Then, come December 2nd, my parents will be flying in!!!  I'm so very excited, but bummed at the same time...my sister won't be able to make the trip because she's starting a new job and will be put on probation for a couple of months.  :'(  Christmas will be here before we know it and 2011 will be here shortly thereafter!!  Did I mention that this coming November 4 is going to mark the 5th year since the hubby and I have been together?!  Oh yea...5 years baby!!!  Can't believe it, but thinking back...I wouldn't have it any other way...I wouldn't have picked any one else to spend the last half decade with and make 2 beautiful babies with.  : D  How cool would it be to have our baby on that day in celebration?!

Anyway...just trying to distract myself from the tediousness of fixing up my iTunes library, but I'll get back to it and finish it up before bed.  Have a good one.  Sorry, no pics tonight.

Happy Fall!
Stephanie

Halloweeners

Ok...so it's November 1st and baby Taytum still hasn't made his appearance.  I realize his due date is not for another 2 1/2 weeks, but the sooner he shows up...the better...not that I want to tell him what to do...but come on little man...momma wants to hold you in her arms already!!!  I'm really trying to leave it up to him with as little interference as possible, but hey...a little walking around the neighborhood or up and down the stairs never did anyone any harm.  Hehe.

Anyway...I am glad that he decided not to make an appearance on Halloween...I get into it for the pure joy of my little RieRie, but I'm not the biggest fan of scary festivities.  It was a nice day, though.  We ended up sticking close to home and trick-o-treating with the other military families in the neighborhood in the earlier hours and then waiting on the porch for visitors to pass out treats.  The community center in our backyard also had a huge party where kids could play games and get balloon animals made.  They also handed out hot dogs, coffee, and hot apple juice (mind you, it was no cider).  We didn't stick around there too long, though as Underdog was howling for us from the back porch.  Rieley was a little apprehensive at times throughout the night, but she really did get into the spirit.  She actually said "trick-o-treat" when she went to the doors and thanked them for her treats.  She also really enjoyed passing out candy and goodies to the visitors that came to our front door.  The little princess didn't want the night to end until her fingers were frozen and ready to fall off.  Enjoy the pictures as our entire family got into the spirit and dressed up for the occassion!!!  Hopefully the next time I write, it'll be to announce the newest addition to our 'ohana!  Stay clued in.

Happy November!
Stephanie
